Twelve minutes. One life. The infection is already inside.
Outbreak is a round-based zombie infection mode built from the ground up rather than downloaded. Every round locks a lobby into a map with a handful of players already secretly infected, then starts a twelve minute clock. Humans get one life and have to scavenge for it. Zombies get unlimited lives and only need to turn everybody before the clock runs out.
What you are getting into
Rounds that start fast
Players gather in the lobby, set a team preference, buy classes and check quests. Three maps go to a vote, the winner loads, and gold gets spent in the pre-round shop. Then twelve minutes, with the infection breaking out a minute in. Rounds cycle continuously, so you are never waiting long.
The infection starts inside your group
A small group begins the round already infected and looks completely human. Watch your teammates: shaking and uncontrollable head twitching mean somebody is about to turn. The Scanner is how a group works out who is already lost, and being wrong is expensive.
Build your gun out of the map
Loot chests hold guns, ammunition, armor and the parts to make the rest. You assemble weapons straight in your inventory with no crafting table, so a bad drop is still progress toward something. Barricades go over the windows and doors, take real time for zombies to chew through, and can be repaired mid-attack.
Radiation instead of a health bar
Getting bitten does not kill you, it infects you. Radiation climbs with every hit that lands and with toxic gas, and when it maxes out you turn. Bandages, syringes and radiation tablets are the difference between a scare and a conversion. Fall far enough and you break a leg, limping until you patch it.
Thirteen zombie classes
The Tank smashes through barricades, the Spitter melts defensive positions with acid, the Hellhound runs down anyone who breaks cover, and the Bomber clears a room of campers at once. Every class has a right-click ability paid out of a recharging power meter, and a limited number of lives before it locks, so no lobby is all Tanks.
Progress that carries between rounds
Gold comes from kills, infections, damage and survival time, and it is yours permanently. Spend it on classes and pre-round gear. Weapon upgrades bought with parts collected during rounds are permanent too, and daily quests, achievements, the mailbox and ranks all keep paying out.
