Weapon Upgrades
General#
Upgrades are the only permanent progression in Outbreak that changes how you play rather than what you own. Each weapon has its own tree, and buying a tier improves every copy of that weapon you find from then on, whether you looted it, crafted it or bought its base in the Item Shop.
Open them at the Upgrades NPC in the lobby or with /upgrades. They cannot be opened mid-round.
They are paid for with Parts, not gold.
The Gun Lines#
Every gun has the same six lines. Tiers must be bought in order and each costs considerably more than the last.
| Upgrade | Tiers | At Maximum | Needs Weapon Mods |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fast Reload | 5 | Reload up to 35 percent faster | Sometimes |
| Extended Mag | 5 | Larger magazine | Sometimes |
| Ammo Bag | 5 | Spawn with a full magazine | No |
| High Powered | 3 | Up to 30 percent more damage | Yes |
| Quick Fire | 3 | Up to 34 percent faster | Yes |
| Precision Sights | 4 | Up to 50 percent tighter spread | Yes |
Exact tier values and costs differ per weapon and are listed in full on each gun's own page.
The Remington 1900 and Stevens 94 have no Extended Mag line, since a break action has nowhere to put extra rounds.
The Melee Lines#
The Katana, Kitchen Knife and Nail Bat have a three-line tree. The Blade has none.
| Upgrade | Tiers | At Maximum |
|---|---|---|
| Sharpened | 3 | 30 percent more damage |
| Reinforced | 3 | Up to 30 extra durability |
| Lightweight | 3 | 30 percent less hunger drain |
Which to Buy First#
Ammo Bag is the most undervalued line in the game. Guns are found nearly empty: a Remington 700 arrives with one round in a five-round magazine, and both break-action shotguns arrive completely empty. Ammo Bag at maximum means a full magazine on pickup, which often means having a working weapon in the first minute rather than the fifth. It also never costs Weapon Mods.
After that:
- High Powered on whatever you actually use is the biggest raw improvement, and it scales per projectile, so it is worth the most on the UMP-9 and the shotguns.
- Fast Reload matters most on the shell-by-shell reloaders, where filling a tube from empty is genuinely slow.
- Extended Mag is close to mandatory on the small-magazine weapons like the M4 Carbine and the UMP-9.
Where Not to Spend#
Precision Sights does nothing on the Glock-19, Desert Eagle or SW .44 Magnum. All three already have perfect accuracy, so there is nothing for the line to improve, and it costs Weapon Mods to buy anyway.
Invest in weapons you can obtain on demand. The five craftable guns and the melee weapons pay back far more reliably than a rifle you find once a night.
Upgrades and Loot#
Guns found in a loot chest are built for whoever opens the chest, using their upgrades and equipped skin. Being first through the door is worth more than it looks.
The same applies to crafted weapons and to anything bought in the shop, so your upgrades follow you everywhere without any action on your part.
